Brig George Younghusband died on January 27th, 1970, at his home, The Neuadd, Crickhowell.

He was the son of Maj.-Gen. Sir George Younghusband, K.C.M.G., K.C.I.E., C.B., and was born in 1896.

He was at Eton and joined the 11th Hussars (P.A.O.) on November 11th, 1914. He served with the 11th throughout the 1914-1918 War and remained with that regiment until he joined the 3rd Hussars at Tidwonh in 1936.

He was promoted Brevt Lt Col and in August 1939, he took over command of the Regiment. After only a short period in command at Tidworth and in Pocklington, Yorkshire, he was appointed A.A. & Q.M.G. of the 2nd Armoured Division on January lst, 1940. In March 1941, he was promoted to full Colonel and appointed G.S.O. I of the same Division. He went with it to the Middle East but was captured with its Headquarters at El Mechili in the Western Desert, in 1941.

It was a bad day for our forces in the desert when George was captured. The loss to the Army may perhaps be measured by the fact that he was able to earn his C B.E. despite, and largely because of being a prisoner, and later on the run.

Shortly after his return to England, he was appointed Commander 136 Infantry Brigade and successively Commander Divisional Troop Brigade 45th Division; Commander 45th Division and Commander Civil Resettlement.

He was awarded the C.B.E. in 1945 and in 1948 was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Breconshire.

George was not only a keen, capable and energetic soldier but a delightful companion who enjoyed all sports and games. He was a good cricketer, a keen polo player, a good shot and since his retirement had great enjoyment from his rod on the Wye.

No activity with which George was connected could ever be other than happy. His warm humanity and his wisdom could draw out the best in anyone, and he had a remarkable power to inspire confidence. He could never have appreciated the gap he would leave behind him among all who had known him, and especially among that band of friends whom he collected to dine so happily together in London on an evening in November each year.
